One holiday down, one to go!

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Saturday, November 29, 2014, In : Miscellaneous
I hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving! This happens to be my favorite holiday of them all! No pressure, just food. Yum! And I know my pets love the little tidbits they get here and there throughout the day. The kitchen floor is never dirty for long. Of course there are some holiday food items your pets should never get, or get in very small doses so be careful sharing too much with them.

Holiday appointments go fast so be sure to get your pet booked soon so they are so fresh and so clea...

Bad to the bone.

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Sunday, March 23, 2014, In : Miscellaneous
Whenever I tell anyone what I do for a living the first question I am asked is "Do you get bit a lot?". Of course I get bit, but there are so many different levels of dog bites that it's hard to answer that question with a simple yes or no. I think people group all bites into one category of aggressive behavior where the dog is looking to rip us to shreds.  Even my own children who are surrounded by dogs didn't understand the different ways dogs communicate through biting.  At first hearing "...

Wow, it's been too long!

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Sunday, March 23, 2014, In : Miscellaneous
So I had big plans of blogging about our Westminster party.  About Westminster in general.  Then about the first grooming competition of the year in Atlanta and so on, and somehow the time got away from me.  So here are all the blogs I wanted to write wrapped up into one.

Our Bark Central party was so much fun!  We had about 25 people attend and we were so rowdy they gave us a private room with a projection tv screen and our own dedicated waitstaff.  Earlier in the day I had gotten the news ...

Tina and Pluto update

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Saturday, January 11, 2014, In : Miscellaneous
Whew!! What a way to end 2013...as you'll recall Tina became the proud mama of a sweet German Shepherd named Pluto in November. Well, not two weeks after Pluto came home, he decided to go on a walkabout by himself. I got the frantic text from Tina saying he had been missing for about 4 hours and that she wouldn't be making it into work the next day.  Immediately I drove to her house with my dog, Bear, to walk with Tina through the bitterly cold woods surrounding her house. We called for him, ...

The Circle of Life

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Sunday, November 10, 2013, In : Miscellaneous
On Oct 19, Tina headed out for her favorite destination, Best Friends Animal Society in Kanab, Utah.  Little did she know the pendulum of emotions she would be put through in only a few short days.  While there she was volunteering with the dogs and cats.  Tuesday, the 22nd, she had blocked off as a day she was going to be "off campus" and exploring the surrounding area with its majestic canyons and state parks.  Well, before she had the chance to begin her journey, she received a call from h...

Tina's trip to Best Friends Animal Society

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Sunday, June 9, 2013, In : Miscellaneous
Be careful what you say to Tina when you come into the shop...mention Best Friends and you may want to grab a cup of coffee before she gets started cause you're going to be chatting for awhile. :) Tina went to Best Friends Animal Society earlier this year and it changed her life.  She is literally counting the minutes until she can be back there and ultimately when she can live there year round (I shudder at the thought!).

Upon her arrival, she was greeted by resident pets and she knew immed...

Blog problems

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Sunday, May 12, 2013, In : Miscellaneous
Well...we at Little Shop have had some computer issues.  We are pet groomers, NOT IT specialists, so do forgive our delay in updating the blog.  All is not solved as of yet, but we were able to get our paws on a computer and internet in the same location today and therefore will be blogging our brains out.  Ok ok, maybe not THAT crazy but we will post some updated info.  First of all, Happy Mother's Day to all the moms out there...whether your children be 2 legged or 4, they both count!

Animal Planet has a hit!

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Sunday, January 22, 2012, In : Miscellaneous
Came across a show on Animal Planet tonight that I have now set on my TiVo, My Cat From Hell.  Jackson Galaxy is the cat world's Victoria Stilwell (from It's Me or the Dog for those of you who don't know, check it out).  He is a cat behaviorist who deals with kitty conundrums and helps families live more in harmony with their feline friends.  I highly recommend watching it if you have cats, are considering getting a cat, or just want to learn more about how to handle cats.  It's obvious from ...

Need some good reading material?

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Thursday, November 17, 2011, In : Miscellaneous
Here's several blogs that I often frequent.  I know many of the people writing these blogs and they are caring pet professionals with a wealth of knowledge that is apropos to both pet stylists and pet parents.  Thought I'd share these treasures with you as I enjoy getting lost for hours in their posts and you may too!

Pet First Aid and Care written by Mary Oquendo C.M.P.T.I, C.C.S.  Mary is not only a good friend of mine, but also a very active player in advancing pet first aid knowledge aroun...

Holiday survival guide: pet section.

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Wednesday, November 9, 2011, In : Miscellaneous
When the house begins to fill up with family, friends and more importantly food, it can get a little hairy trying to keep both visitors and pets happy.  Here are some ideas we've come up with to help ease the stress on all involved.

- Give your dogs a good walk or romp in the yard early in the day to help tire them out and release some of the tension they've been sensing in you and other family members leading up to the big day.  Not only will it help to stretch their legs, but it's a good w...

The Top 10 reasons your dog's haircut costs more than yours

Posted by Erin McLaughlin on Friday, September 30, 2011, In : Miscellaneous
  • Your hairdresser doesn't wash and clean your rear end and then follow up with a sanitary trim.
  • You don't go 6-8 weeks without washing or brushing your hair and rolling in the yard in the meantime.
  • Your hairdresser doesn't clean your ears and eyes.
  • Your haircut doesn't include a mani/pedi.
  • You sit still for your hairdresser.
  • Your hairdresser only washes and cuts the hair on your head, not your entire body.
  • You don't bite or scratch your hairdresser.
  • Your hairdresser doesn't give you a bath.
  • Your ha...

Something worth passing on...

While I try to keep 99% of the information posted on here to be pet related, this was just too good not to share.  Check out www.CleaningForAReason.com if you know a woman with cancer.  This nonprofit organization offers once a month free home cleanings for four months for women who are undergoing treatment.  All she has to do is sign up and have a doctor's note verifying her treatment.  Please pass the word on to let people know there are people out there that are thinking of even their most...

We would like to thank our veterans, soldiers, and their K-9 comrades for all their sacrifice and service both at home and abroad.  Please visit http://uswardogs.org/id40.html and learn more about what our four legged friends do for our country.

Here is a brief description from their website:  "It has been estimated that these courageous canine heroes saved over 10,000 lives during the conflict in Vietnam.  Today all branches of our Armed Forces are utilizing Military Patrol Dogs specializin...
